Function of exponential order

Builds on FunctionExponential function

Definition

Let f ⁣:[0,∞)→ℂf \colon [0, \infty) \to \C be a function and let a∈ℝa \in \R. The function ff is of exponential order aa if there are constants M>0M > 0 and T≥0T \ge 0 such that ∣f(t)∣≤Meatfor all t≥T,\abs{f(t)} \le M e^{at} \quad \text{for all } t \ge T, where eate^{at} is the exponential function. The function ff is of exponential order if it is of exponential order aa for some real aa.

Remarks

Example: f(t)=tnf(t) = t^n with n∈ℕn \in \N is of exponential order 11, since et≥tn/n!e^t \ge t^n / n! for t≥0t \ge 0 by the power series of ete^t; so ∣f(t)∣≤n! et\abs{f(t)} \le n!\, e^t with T=0T = 0. In fact tnt^n is of exponential order aa for every a>0a > 0. Non-example: f(t)=et2f(t) = e^{t^2} is not of exponential order, since et2/eat=et(t−a)→∞e^{t^2}/e^{at} = e^{t(t - a)} \to \infty for every real aa. A bounded function, such as sin⁡t\sin t, is of exponential order 00. Some books require the bound for all t≥0t \ge 0 (T=0T = 0); for functions that are bounded on bounded intervals the two versions agree, after enlarging MM.
