Definition

Let EE be a locally compact Hausdorff space with a countable base, and let EΔ=E∪{Δ}E_\Delta = E \cup \set{\Delta} be its one-point compactification; the point Δ\Delta is the cemetery. Let X=(Xt)t≥0X = (X_t)_{t \ge 0} be a stochastic process with values in EΔE_\Delta, adapted to a filtration (ℱt)(\mathcal{F}_t), with a family of probability measures (Px)x∈EΔ(P^x)_{x \in E_\Delta}. XX is a Hunt process if:

  1. XX is a Markov process with respect to (ℱt)(\mathcal{F}_t) under each PxP^x, with Px(X0=x)=1P^x(X_0 = x) = 1, and Δ\Delta is absorbing: Xt=ΔX_t = \Delta implies Xs=ΔX_s = \Delta for all s≥ts \ge t.
  2. Each path t↦Xtt \mapsto X_t is right-continuous on [0,∞)[0, \infty) and has left limits in EΔE_\Delta on (0,∞)(0, \infty).
  3. XX has the strong Markov property at every stopping time of (ℱt)(\mathcal{F}_t), where (ℱt)(\mathcal{F}_t) is right-continuous and suitably completed.
  4. XX is quasi-left-continuous: if TnT_n are stopping times increasing to TT, then XTn→XTX_{T_n} \to X_T almost surely on {T<∞}\set{T < \infty}, under each PxP^x.

Remarks

The time ζ=inf⁡{t:Xt=Δ}\zeta = \inf\set{t : X_t = \Delta} is the lifetime of the process. Example: Brownian motion in ℝd\R^d is a Hunt process, with ζ=∞\zeta = \infty; more generally every Feller process with right-continuous paths having left limits is a Hunt process. Non-example: on E=ℝE = \R, let the process move deterministically at unit speed, except that it jumps up by 11 when it reaches the point 11 from below. It is a strong Markov process with right-continuous paths, but clause 4 fails. Started at 00, the stopping times Tn=1−1/nT_n = 1 - 1/n increase to T=1T = 1, while XTn→1X_{T_n} \to 1 and XT=2X_T = 2. Quasi-left-continuity allows jumps only at totally inaccessible times, such as the jump times of a Poisson process.
