Inversion of the Hilbert transform

Builds on Hilbert transformLp spaceM. Riesz theorem on the Hilbert transformFourier transform

Statement

Let 1<p<∞1 < p < \infty and let f∈Lp(ℝ)f \in L^p(\R), an element of the LpL^p space. Let HH denote the Hilbert transform. Then Hf∈Lp(ℝ)Hf \in L^p(\R) and H(Hf)=−fH(Hf) = -f almost everywhere. So HH is a bijection of Lp(ℝ)L^p(\R) onto itself, with inverse H−1=−HH^{-1} = -H.

Remarks

For f∈L2(ℝ)f \in L^2(\R) the Fourier transform of HfHf is −isgn⁡(ξ) f^(ξ)-i \sgn(\xi)\, \hat f(\xi). Applying this twice multiplies f^\hat f by (−isgn⁡ξ)2=−1(-i \sgn \xi)^2 = -1 for ξ≠0\xi \ne 0, which gives H2f=−fH^2 f = -f on L2L^2. For general pp, M. Riesz's theorem says that HH is bounded on LpL^p, so H2H^2 is bounded too, and the identity extends from the dense subspace L2∩LpL^2 \cap L^p by continuity. The hypothesis p>1p > 1 is needed: for f∈L1(ℝ)f \in L^1(\R) the function HfHf need not lie in L1L^1. For example, the indicator function of [0,1][0, 1] has Hf(x)=1πlog⁡∣xx−1∣Hf(x) = \frac{1}{\pi} \log \abs{\frac{x}{x - 1}}, which behaves like 1πx\frac{1}{\pi x} as ∣x∣→∞\abs{x} \to \infty and is not integrable.

Example: for f(x)=11+x2f(x) = \frac{1}{1 + x^2} one has Hf(x)=x1+x2Hf(x) = \frac{x}{1 + x^2} and then H[x1+x2]=−11+x2H\big[\frac{x}{1 + x^2}\big] = -\frac{1}{1 + x^2}.

Going deeper

For a student

The inversion formula says that HH is, up to sign, its own inverse; on L2L^2 it is a unitary operator with H∗=−HH^* = -H. It explains the symmetry between the two halves of a Hilbert transform pair. An example is the pair of real and imaginary parts of the boundary values of a function in the Hardy space of the upper half-plane. Together with the boundedness on LpL^p for 1<p<∞1 < p < \infty, it is the starting point of the theory of singular integral operators.
