Kronecker's lemma

Builds on Convergent seriesConvergent sequenceMonotone sequence

Statement

Let (xn)n≥1(x_n)_{n \ge 1} be a real sequence such that the series ∑n=1∞xn\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} x_n converges. Let (bn)n≥1(b_n)_{n \ge 1} be a monotone sequence of real numbers with 0<b1≤b2≤⋯0 < b_1 \le b_2 \le \cdots and bn→∞b_n \to \infty. Then lim⁡n→∞1bn∑k=1nbkxk=0.\lim_{n \to \infty} \frac{1}{b_n} \sum_{k=1}^{n} b_k x_k = 0.

Remarks

Let rk=∑j>kxjr_k = \sum_{j > k} x_j be the tails of the series, so xk=rk−1−rkx_k = r_{k-1} - r_k with rk→0r_k \to 0. Summation by parts writes 1bn∑k≤nbkxk\frac{1}{b_n} \sum_{k \le n} b_k x_k as b1r0/bn−rnb_1 r_0 / b_n - r_n plus a weighted average of r1,…,rn−1r_1, \ldots, r_{n-1} with weights (bk+1−bk)/bn(b_{k+1} - b_k)/b_n. These weights are nonnegative, their sum is at most 11, and each fixed weight tends to 00, so the average tends to 00 because rk→0r_k \to 0. Example: with bn=nb_n = n, if ∑yn/n\sum y_n / n converges, then (y1+⋯+yn)/n→0(y_1 + \cdots + y_n)/n \to 0.

Going deeper

For a student

The main use is in probability. To prove a strong law of large numbers, one shows that ∑Xn/n\sum X_n / n converges almost surely, and Kronecker's lemma with bn=nb_n = n then gives (X1+⋯+Xn)/n→0(X_1 + \cdots + X_n)/n \to 0. The proof is a summation by parts followed by an averaging argument, as in the Stolz–Cesàro theorem.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
