Morrey quasiconvexity
Builds on Sobolev spaceConvex function on R^nRank-one convexity
Definition
Let and let be continuous. The function is quasiconvex (in the sense of Morrey) if for every bounded open set , every and every . Here is the Sobolev space of Lipschitz maps that vanish on . The number is the Lebesgue measure of .
Remarks
If the inequality holds for one bounded open set with , it holds for all of them; often is the unit cube.
Example: every convex is quasiconvex. Since on , the average of over is , and Jensen's inequality gives the inequality.
Non-example: is not quasiconvex. For , the cross term vanishes, so the average of is .
Every quasiconvex function is rank-one convex. For or , quasiconvexity is ordinary convexity. For and , Šverák gave a rank-one convex function that is not quasiconvex; the case is open.
