Pivotal quantity

Builds on Random variableProbability distribution

Definition

Let XX be a random sample whose law PθP_\theta depends on an unknown parameter θ\theta in a set Θ\Theta. A pivotal quantity is a function g(X,θ)g(X, \theta) of the sample and the parameter with the following property. The law of the random variable g(X,θ)g(X, \theta) under PθP_\theta is the same for every θ∈Θ\theta \in \Theta.

Remarks

Example: let X1,…,XnX_1, \dots, X_n be i.i.d. 𝒩(μ,σ2)\mathcal{N}(\mu, \sigma^2) with θ=(μ,σ2)\theta = (\mu, \sigma^2) unknown, let Xˉ\bar X be the sample mean and SS the sample standard deviation. Then T=n(Xˉ−μ)/ST = \sqrt{n}(\bar X - \mu)/S has Student's t-distribution with n−1n - 1 degrees of freedom for every θ\theta, so TT is a pivotal quantity. Non-example: in the same model, n(Xˉ−μ)\sqrt{n}(\bar X - \mu) is not pivotal, since its law 𝒩(0,σ2)\mathcal{N}(0, \sigma^2) depends on σ2\sigma^2. A pivotal quantity need not be a statistic, since it may involve θ\theta. If Pθ(a≤g(X,θ)≤b)=1−αP_\theta(a \le g(X, \theta) \le b) = 1 - \alpha for every θ\theta, then the set {θ:a≤g(X,θ)≤b}\set{\theta : a \le g(X, \theta) \le b} is a confidence region of level 1−α1 - \alpha.
