Description
Let be a simplex, a triangle when , and let be an integer. Let be the polynomials of degree at most on , and the homogeneous ones of degree . The Raviart–Thomas space of index on is the vector fields with and . The degrees of freedom are the moments of the normal component on each face against of that face. For they also include the moments of against . On a mesh, the global space is formed by the piecewise fields whose normal moments agree on each interior face.
Remarks
Lowest order on a triangle: , of dimension . On an edge with unit normal , the points satisfy for a constant . So is constant on , and it is fixed by the flux . The three fluxes determine , which gives the three degrees of freedom.
The dimension of on a triangle is . Matching the normal moments makes the normal component continuous across faces. So the global space lies in , the fields with divergence in . The divergence maps onto . Paired with discontinuous piecewise polynomials of degree , these spaces give a stable mixed finite element method for the Poisson equation. They were introduced by Pierre-Arnaud Raviart and Jean-Marie Thomas.
