Number theory Proposition

Totient of a prime power

Builds on Euler's totient functionPrime number

Statement

Let pp be a prime number and let kk be a positive integer. Then φ(pk)=pk−1(p−1)=pk−pk−1\varphi(p^k) = p^{k-1} (p - 1) = p^k - p^{k-1}, where φ\varphi is Euler's totient function.

Remarks

The proof: an integer is coprime to pkp^k if and only if pp does not divide it. Among 1,…,pk1, \dots, p^k, the multiples of pp are p,2p,…,pk−1⋅pp, 2p, \dots, p^{k-1} \cdot p, so there are pk−1p^{k-1} of them. For example, φ(8)=4\varphi(8) = 4 and φ(27)=18\varphi(27) = 18. With the multiplicativity of the totient function, this formula gives φ(n)\varphi(n) from the prime factorization of nn.
