Coprime integers

Builds on Greatest common divisor

Definition

Two integers aa and bb are coprime when their greatest common divisor is 11, that is, when gcd⁡(a,b)=1\gcd(a, b) = 1.

Remarks

Equivalently, aa and bb are coprime when the only integers that divide both of them are 11 and −1-1. For example, 88 and 1515 are coprime, but 88 and 1212 are not, because 44 divides both. The integers 11 and −1-1 are coprime to each integer. The integer 00 is coprime only to 11 and −1-1. By Bézout's identity, aa and bb are coprime if and only if ax+by=1a x + b y = 1 for some integers xx and yy.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
