Variance of the normal distribution

Builds on Normal distributionVarianceMean of the normal distributionVariance under scalingVariance under translation

Statement

Let μ∈ℝ\mu \in \mathbb{R}, let σ2>0\sigma^2 > 0 and let XX have the normal distribution 𝒩(μ,σ2)\mathcal{N}(\mu, \sigma^2). Then Var⁡(X)=σ2.\operatorname{Var}(X) = \sigma^2.

Remarks

Proof: Z=(X−μ)/σZ = (X - \mu)/\sigma has the law 𝒩(0,1)\mathcal{N}(0, 1), where σ=σ2\sigma = \sqrt{\sigma^2}. Integration by parts gives E[Z2]=∫z2φ(z) dz=∫φ(z) dz=1E[Z^2] = \int z^2 \varphi(z) \, dz = \int \varphi(z) \, dz = 1. Since E[Z]=0E[Z] = 0 by the mean of the normal distribution, Var⁡(Z)=1\operatorname{Var}(Z) = 1. The scaling and translation rules then give Var⁡(X)=σ2Var⁡(Z)=σ2\operatorname{Var}(X) = \sigma^2 \operatorname{Var}(Z) = \sigma^2. So the two parameters of 𝒩(μ,σ2)\mathcal{N}(\mu, \sigma^2) are its mean and its variance.
