Riemann zeta function as a series

Example

For a complex number ss with real part σ=Re⁡s\sigma = \operatorname{Re} s, consider the series ζ(s)=∑n=1∞1ns,n−s=e−slog⁡n.\zeta(s) = \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{1}{n^s}, \qquad n^{-s} = e^{-s \log n}. It is the Dirichlet series of the constant arithmetic function a(n)=1a(n) = 1. Its terms satisfy ∣n−s∣=n−σ\abs{n^{-s}} = n^{-\sigma}. By the p-series test, ∑nn−σ\sum_n n^{-\sigma} converges exactly when σ>1\sigma > 1. So the series converges absolutely for every ss with Re⁡s>1\operatorname{Re} s > 1.

Fix σ0>1\sigma_0 > 1; on the half-plane Re⁡s≥σ0\operatorname{Re} s \ge \sigma_0 the bound ∣n−s∣≤n−σ0\abs{n^{-s}} \le n^{-\sigma_0} holds. So the Weierstrass M-test, in its form for complex-valued functions, shows that the series converges uniformly there. On the whole half-plane Re⁡s>1\operatorname{Re} s > 1 the convergence is not uniform. Indeed, for real s→1+s \to 1^+ the tail ∑n>Nn−s\sum_{n > N} n^{-s} tends to ∑n>Nn−1=∞\sum_{n > N} n^{-1} = \infty. So for every NN the tail is unbounded on the half-plane. At s=1s = 1 the series is the harmonic series, which diverges.

Remarks

The sum of this series on Re⁡s>1\operatorname{Re} s > 1 is the Riemann zeta function, which extends beyond the half-plane by analytic continuation. At s=2s = 2 the series gives ζ(2)=π2/6\zeta(2) = \pi^2/6, the Basel problem.
