Trigonometric definition of Chebyshev polynomials

Builds on Chebyshev polynomialsTrigonometric functions

Statement

Let T0=1T_0 = 1, T1=xT_1 = x and Tn+1=2x Tn−Tn−1T_{n+1} = 2x \, T_n - T_{n-1} for n≥1n \ge 1 be the Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. Then for every integer n≥0n \ge 0 and every real θ\theta, Tn(cos⁡θ)=cos⁡(nθ).T_n(\cos \theta) = \cos(n \theta). Equivalently, Tn(x)=cos⁡(narccos⁡x)T_n(x) = \cos(n \arccos x) for all x∈[−1,1]x \in [-1, 1]. Moreover, TnT_n is the only polynomial with this property.

Remarks

Proof idea: the cases n=0n = 0 and n=1n = 1 are clear. The sum formula for the cosine gives cos⁡((n+1)θ)+cos⁡((n−1)θ)=2cos⁡θcos⁡(nθ)\cos((n + 1)\theta) + \cos((n - 1)\theta) = 2 \cos \theta \cos(n \theta). This is the recursion of the TnT_n evaluated at x=cos⁡θx = \cos \theta, so induction on nn gives the identity. Uniqueness holds because two polynomials that agree on the infinite set [−1,1][-1, 1] are equal.

Example: cos⁡(3θ)=4cos⁡3θ−3cos⁡θ\cos(3\theta) = 4 \cos^3 \theta - 3 \cos \theta, which matches T3=4x3−3xT_3 = 4x^3 - 3x.

Many texts take the identity as the definition of TnT_n and derive the recursion from it. Outside [−1,1][-1, 1] the same polynomial satisfies Tn(cosh⁡t)=cosh⁡(nt)T_n(\cosh t) = \cosh(n t) for real tt, by the same induction.

Going deeper

For a student

The identity explains most properties of TnT_n at once. It gives ∣Tn∣≤1\abs{T_n} \le 1 on [−1,1][-1, 1], the zeros cos⁡(2k−1)π2n\cos \frac{(2k - 1)\pi}{2n} and the extreme points cos⁡kπn\cos \frac{k\pi}{n}. It also turns expansions in TnT_n on [−1,1][-1, 1] into cosine series in θ\theta, so Fourier methods apply to Chebyshev series. The composition rule Tm(Tn(x))=Tmn(x)T_m(T_n(x)) = T_{mn}(x) follows from cos⁡(m⋅nθ)=cos⁡(mnθ)\cos(m \cdot n\theta) = \cos(mn\theta).
