Special functions Theorem

Angle addition formulas

Builds on Sine and cosineCauchy product of absolutely convergent series

Statement

For all real numbers xx and yy, sin⁡(x+y)=sin⁡xcos⁡y+cos⁡xsin⁡y,\sin(x + y) = \sin x \cos y + \cos x \sin y, cos⁡(x+y)=cos⁡xcos⁡y−sin⁡xsin⁡y.\cos(x + y) = \cos x \cos y - \sin x \sin y.

Remarks

One proof multiplies the power series with the Cauchy product and uses the binomial theorem. Another proof fixes yy and shows that the difference of the two sides solves f′′=−ff'' = -f with f(0)=f′(0)=0f(0) = f'(0) = 0. With y=xy = x, they give sin⁡2x=2sin⁡xcos⁡x\sin 2x = 2 \sin x \cos x and cos⁡2x=cos⁡2x−sin⁡2x\cos 2x = \cos^2 x - \sin^2 x. Mathlib states them as Real.sin_add and Real.cos_add.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
